The LISST-FLOC has a size range for suspended
particles ranging from 7.5 to 1,500 microns. In all other aspects, it
is identical to the LISST-100X instruments. The
LISST-Floc measures scattering at extremely small angles - it
covers the range of scattering angles from 0.016 - 3 degrees.
This can be used to measure optical consequence of turbulence,
besides particle dynamics. As the LISST-FLOC relies on scattering a
very narrow angles, laser beam alignment issues become much more
critical and important than for the LISST-100X. As
a consequence of this, it is not recommended to use a LISST-FLOC for
profiling measurements or at water depths larger than ~ 30-50m. It
should ideally be deployed on a platform (mooring, tripod etc.).
The significantly larger size range is achieved by changes in
the optics. A longer focal length receiving lens is employed, and
to deal with the intrinsically greater likelihood of small numer
statistics of the largest particles, the diameter of the laser beam is
expanded also.
A notable detail: due to the extra length required by the longer
focal length of the receiving optics, the main instrument case does not
have room for batteries. As such, a separate battery case is provided.
Data capacity, instrument programming, and data reduction are all identical to the LISST-100X. The LISST-FLOC is discontinued as of 2009. Please see LISST-HOLO instead.
